The Athletic reported on Sunday that the two sides had reached an agreement in principle on a deal worth up to €76.5million (£65.3m; $87.8m) for the 30-year-old. City are expecting to receive at least €71.5m from the deal, which includes an upfront fee of €60m and around €11m of Bradd-ons which are seen as achievable. Barcelona have secured Rodri's signature ahead of rivals Real Madrid, who explored a move for the midfielder during the window. Earlier this month, Barcelona made an offer of around €45m plus add-ons for Rodri, with City communicating that they would expect a fee closer to €80m in order to sanction his exit. Rodri won both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup with City last season and took his total appearances for the club up to 298, but showed no willingness to extend his contract beyond its expiration date of next summer. Early suggestions on both sides of the transaction indicated the purchased stake was in the range of approximately 30 per cent to one-third, but The Athletic can reveal the figure is actually much closer to 40 per cent, according to sources with knowledge of the deal, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the confidentiality of the process. 1892 Holdings, a consortium headed up and led by Amit Bhatia, the former Queens Park Rangers co-owner who will take up the position of vice-chairman at Liverpool, has purchased around a 38 per cent shareholding in Liverpool. That is a much more significant share of the club, while there is also an option for the consortium to buy a controlling stake in the Premier League side, as per the terms of their agreement with FSG, in the next 12 months. The language around the potential for them to buy an even bigger stake, however, does not constitute a formal commitment, so it is only an option that could lead to further investment as opposed to being a requirement. If this is to be the end of Guglielmo Vicario’s association with Tottenham , he will be partly remembered for his impressive start to life in north London. He was a stand out in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, starting all 38 league games as Spurs finished fifth. His sophomore term at Spurs was hampered by an ankle injury, limiting him to just 24 starts, but he is set to leave for Turin as a Europa League champion, keeping a clean sheet in the final and making numerous important saves on their journey to Bilbao. The Athletic reported on Sunday that the Italian club were not proceeding with a move for Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa following talks between the clubs, and turned their attention to other targets. The move sees Vicario return to Italy, where he spent his entire club career before joining Spurs in 2023 from Empoli for a fee of around €20million (£17.2m, $21.9m). The permanent job has been vacant since Senegal sacked Pape Thiaw, in charge since 2024, after the national team’s round-of-32 World Cup exit. Vieira, who was born in Dakar, Senegal, has been out of football since November when a winless start to Genoa’s Serie A season saw him leave his role as head coach only 11 months after being appointed. McKenzie is in the final year of his contract and Toulouse made it clear they would not let the player leave this summer, so the clubs found a compromise for a winter move. The Union will pay a fee in the region of $2.5 million for the USMNT defender, sources say. McKenzie will be a designated player for the Union. McKenzie, 27, is a product of the Union’s academy and made 59 first-team appearances before being transferred to Belgian side Genk in 2021. He moved to Toulouse in 2024 and remains a key player and leader for the club, hence the French team’s reluctance to let him go this summer. The center back has 30 caps for the USMNT and was part of the World Cup squad this summer. The Union started slow this season but has come on strong this summer, with the club getting back to its roots of high-pressing and youth development. The club already re-signed key defender Kai Wagner and now are closing in on a deal to bring McKenzie back to the team. Toulouse has been approached for comment. Who are the Premier League's biggest net spenders so far this summer? Promoted clubs need to spend more than ever to survive, and everything is relative, but Ipswich and Coventry sitting second and fourth in the net spend table is an eye-opener. So too is the lack of activity at some of the league’s richest. Liverpool have spent £91million, though more than half of that was committed in February on Jeremy Jacquet, and the departures of Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have lopped significant sums off the wage bill. Even further down the spending table are Manchester United , where net outlay sits at only £44million. That is a marked downturn but like Liverpool, it follows hefty past spending. Within the first two years of Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquiring a stake in the club, more than £500m went on new players. Newly-promoted Premier League clubs pushing the boat out on transfers Premier League spending continues to trundle on, with gross purchases among the 20 clubs nearing the £2.2billion ($3bn) mark. The total net spend — fees paid on acquiring players minus sales — for transfers is above £850million, with all of the following figures coming from Transfermarkt. If that isn’t surprising, perhaps the identity of two of the four biggest spenders might be. Recently promoted Ipswich Town and Coventry City have each spent more than £100million net. Add in the third side from the Championship last season, Hull City , and the Premier League’s newest clubs have racked up £330m in gross combined fees on new players. That is only £45million behind what Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds United spent a year ago, even with two weeks of the window remaining. Such indulgence proved pivotal in two of that trio surviving relegation after two consecutive seasons in which all three promoted sides went straight back down. In Ipswich’s case, survival won’t go begging for the want of trying.
